The College of Science provides a core instructional role at Oregon State University ( OSU ), supporting the ideals of learning, discovery, and engagement that are the foundation of a land-grant university. The College embraces instruction and research, in disciplines ranging from the physical, mathematical, statistical sciences to the life sciences that are based in unbiased inquiry and a dedication to discovery and innovation. The College of Science is an essential partner for three of the university's world-class research centers, namely the Linus Pauling Institute, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and the Center for Quantitative Life Sciences. OSU is also home to large regionally and nationally important vertebrate research collections that include fish, reptiles/amphibians, birds and mammals. OSU is one of only two American universities to hold the Land Grant, Sea Grant, Space Grant, and Sun Grant designation and is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Extensive university. OSU is located in Corvallis, a community of 57,000 people situated in the Willamette Valley between Portland and Eugene. Ocean beaches, lakes, rivers, forests, high desert, and the rugged Cascade and Coast Ranges are all within a 100-mile drive of Corvallis. Approximately 25,700 undergraduate and 4,700 graduate students are enrolled at OSU , with US students of color, first generation college students, and international students representing 25%, 23%, and 11% of the student population, respectively.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):
Requires PhD or terminal degree and experience in the academic discipline/unit.
Requirements :
PhD in biology
At least 3 years of experience performing remote fieldwork on birds, especially in high elevation or otherwise extreme environments, including use of diverse tracking technologies, collection of life history data, collection of blood samples and mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students in the field.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess, and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
Type:
Field work in extreme and remote environments involves travel to field sites, camping without power or climate control for up to several months at a time, traversing uneven and rugged terrain, long hours, weekend work and exposure to environmental risks such as biting insects, predatory animals, temperature extremes and low oxygen. The projects focus on storms increases the risk of exposure to these factors and may cause discomfort for those unused to harsh conditions.

Description:
The Department of Integrative Biology invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.This position is expected to last approximately 12 months. Appointment at the Research Associate rank is anticipated; however, higher rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
The incumbent in this position will conduct biological field and laboratory research in Jamie Cornelius' laboratory in the Department of Integrative Biology at OSU. The Cornelius lab studies behavioral and physiological responses of birds to challenging environments. We use radiotelemetry, biotelemetry and satellite tags to study behavioral responses of birds to weather events and monitor physiological responses through tissue sampling and metabolic profiling. The incumbent will lead fieldwork on high elevation bird studies and participate as needed in other field and captive based projects in the lab. The incumbent will also participate in diversity initiatives in the lab, including mentorship of students on field projects and running of outreach day camps near field locations.
