Four WWE stars who should have never won Money In the Bank contract (2024)

WWE made a mistake by letting many superstars win Money in the Bank contract.

Money In the Bank has been a consistent source of entertainment for the WWE Universe for over 20 years. Throughout its existence, 30 superstars have ascended the ranks and claimed the coveted briefcase. This includes Edge, the original winner, and CM Punk, who won the briefcase twice.

There is no doubt that many superstars have realized their aspirations by becoming Mr. and Ms. Money In the Bank. However, there are a few stars that some may argue were unworthy. In other words, WWE made a mistake by letting them get possession of the briefcase.

These superstars either accomplished nothing noteworthy with the contract in hand, didn’t need it, or had nothing to do with the match at all. So, without any further ado, here are the four superstars who should have never won Money In the Bank contract.

4. Brock Lesnar

In 2019, the Money In the Bank ladder match was scheduled to include Baron Corbin, Drew McIntyre, Ricochet, Mustafa Ali, Andrade, Finn Balor, Randy Orton, and Sami Zayn. Unfortunately, Zayn was injured on the night before he could take part in the event. Nonetheless, the show must go on, and the match proceeded as normal with one man down.

It was an amazing main event, with each celebrity giving their best to the end. Brock Lesnar’s surprise return came just as Mustafa Ali appeared to be on his way to victory. He appeared as Zayn’s surprise substitute and simply knocked Ali off the ladder before going up to retrieve the briefcase.

Lesnar’s comeback received a lot of attention from the WWE Universe, but in retrospect, his triumph was very dull. After all, he didn’t accomplish anything in the match except make a brief entrance, knock one opponent off the ladder, and win.

3. Kane

Kane’s sole win in seven ladder matches was in 2010when he became Mr. Money in the Bank. It was a significant moment for The Big Red Machine, but one that he honestly did not require. The briefcase had no effect on Kane, who was one of the biggest performers at the time.

Furthermore, he held on for 49 minutes until cashing in on the crowd favorite, Rey Mysterio. It was another milestone in Kane’s long list. However, at the end of the day, the briefcase may have served a much greater purpose in the hands of a rising star than in the hands of a WWE icon.

2. Jack Swagger

Jack Swagger did not have a particularly remarkable WWE career. While he is a physical specimen, his character during his time with the organization has left much to be desired. This was demonstrated even more clearly when he won the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXVI.

Swagger narrowly hung on to the briefcase as he attempted to cash it on then-WWE Champion John Cena on RAW following WrestleMania, but ultimately opted against it. A few days later, he took advantage of Edge’s attack on Chris Jericho, cashing in his contract and became World Heavyweight Champion. While he did accomplish his goal of clutching the briefcase, it was not a particularly thrilling run.

1. Damien Sandow

Damian Sandow was the unexpected winner of the Money in the Bank ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship contract. He stole a win from Cody Rhodes. Sandow lost momentum after Money in the Bank, losing multiple bouts as a contract holder.

On an episode of RAW on October 28, Sandow cashed in on Champion John Cena, presuming he suffered an arm injury. Cena defeated Sandow after delivering an AA. This was the first failed cash-in from a Money in the Bank contract.
