Chapter Text
“The human whose name is written in this note shall die.”
“This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing the person’s name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.”
“If the cause of death is written within the next 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen. If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.”
“After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.”
“The person who uses this notebook cannot go to Heaven or Hell.”
You stare down at the ground with furrowed eyebrows, arms crossed as you lean against your desk. You were still reeling from the disarray and befuddlement of this all being real, if this even was real, but you had pushed that deep down inside you. You will try your damnest to not think about it. It will only distract you from your goal.
“Oh c’mon…” Dyeth starts with a frown, “Did the last rule make you hesitant?”
“I’m just thinking.” You don’t look up from the spot, “Those aren’t all the rules, are they?”
It shrugs, “It’s all the rules you’ll need for right now, besides the Eye Deal.”
You look up at it, confusion the only thing visible on your face. “Elaborate, please.”
“It’s quite simple! If you make the deal, you get to see what Shinigami see!” Its pointer finger goes to its eye. “Everybody’s lifespan and name! Isn’t that neat?” Dyeth’s expression then morphs into an exaggeratedly concerned one. “But that wouldn’t be a deal if we gave it to ya guys for free, hm? So in return, we take half of your lifespan!”
What a terrible deal, for you at least. Kira is probably over the moon about this. And the second Kira. Shit, in all this calamity you almost forgot about them. You’re almost positive that one of them has the eyes. You’d have to go back and do some research, but you’re sure you could piece together which one of them does. If you’d have to put your bets on it now, though, you’d go with the second Kira.
“I don’t suppose you can tell me if either of the Kira’s have the eyes..”
Dyeth giggles and shakes its head, extensive, damp, wet locks moving with it. “Nope! Sorry Silly Billy, but anything that could directly lead you to Kira is a no-go…besides the eyes, of course.”
You raise an eyebrow, “And the eyes would help me find Kira how?”
“Because you can’t see the owner’s lifespan. If you so happened to randomly cross Kira on the street, you’d know it.”
You jolt up in surprise, eyes now locked on Dyeth.
The creature smiles its bizarre and freakish smile, “Ooohh~ That got a real reaction out of you…” It tilts its head like a puppy, “Does that mean that you’ll take the deal?
You say nothing. A couple of moments pass.
“No…” After what feels like an eternity you finally speak with a shake of your head. “No. There’s no guarantee that I’ll be able to figure out who Kira is. It would be irresponsible and idiotic of me to take that without even the slightest clue who they might be…”
Who Could Kira be?
The first thought that comes to your mind is that it would have to be someone you know. Why else you Dyeth give it to you specifically? Yeah, it stated that L or the police would be too easy, but there had to have been smarter people who would’ve made this more fun– Like the top students of Japan; Hideki Ryuga and Light. Maybe it thought that would also be too easy as well. Perhaps it just chooses you because you are intelligent, but not enough.
Then again, if it is someone you know, that would also be extremely interesting and tension-filled to an emotionally detached bystander–Like the one you have in front of you. Kira would have to be extremely smart and meticulous to be still outsmarting someone like L, and most of the people you know aren’t geniuses…
Your face falls as the realization hits you, overtaking every inch of your bones, every nerve in your body, every muscle. A suffocating aura takes over.
Dyeth flinches, disgust present on its face. “Eugh..why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face?” it pouts, searching the body part in question with its rawboned fingers.
You quickly pull out a fresh notebook, flip it open, and scribble every thought that has come to your mind.
There were so many questions squirming and slithering through your mind. If it really is him, how could he act so kind? And what if it’s not him, but someone close to him, because it would be too easy if it were him? Could it be Ryuga? They seem to be new friends… God, why does your head hurt? Is it the stress? Are there any clues that might have missed before that point you to the answer?... And goddamnit, what does that name you saw in the notebook have to do with any of this?
“Erm…you ok? You..you’re breathing very heavily. Hello…? Earth to Y/N…?”
You write down every piece of evidence that you can think of, and circle the most important and intricate details, using arrows to bridge your thoughts. Your hands shake from fury, confusion, or skepticism. You don’t know, but you lack the time and the care to analyze. Every single arrow points to the last thing you wrote down on your paper.
Light Yagami.
You feel a presence creep up behind you, greasy swamp-like hair brushing your shoulders. A snicker is let out, and you can feel the breath graze you. “Ohohoho, I see. Do you have a suspect? That was quick..”
“Am I right?” You whip around quickly, trying to contain your snarl but can’t.
“Fiesty.” Dyeth gibes, “But why would I tell you that? I’m just here to watch.”
Realizing that you’re huffing you try to slow your breathing, “Fine…you won’t tell me?” You shake your head, a distant look in your eyes. “Then, I’ll figure it out myself.”
You whirl back around, slamming the notebook shut and sliding it under your bed for the time being. Adrenaline plows through your veins, pushing you forward to the table where your phone was placed. You picked it up, and only after did you realize that you were shaking. If he really is Kira, then doing this will be the most witless thing you could ever do, but you were already committed. You were committed to saving humanity. The fate of the world rested in your hands. The phone rang once. Twice. Three times. Four. Perhaps he just wasn’t going to pick up. A breath escapes, and you wipe the sweat forming on your forehead. God, what were you doing?
“Y/N? Are you okay?” His voice, sweet as honey, answered. It’s hard to imagine such a voice could be attached to the ghastly actions that plague the earth.
“Light..” The words came harsh and rough, your throat desiccated. “I…uh..”
“Y/N, What’s wrong?”
You swallow deeply. If you were going to do this, it was imperative to act like your life depended on it, And if you're correct, it does. “Come over tomorrow.”
Light was audibly stunned on the other side of the phone, “Is that all?”
“We should bake together.” You nod, feeling more confident as you dedicate yourself to the role of his unwaveringly doting friend. A role that up until a few moments ago, you didn’t have to fake. “You seem to appreciate my baking and we don’t get to see each other often. You are always so busy, this would be a great time for us to connect…alone.”
“Alone?”
“Yes…Alone.”
A small chuckle could be heard over the device, “Yeah? You want us to hang out…All Alone?”
“Yeah.”
“Alright then.” You could hear his smile, “Tomorrow it is. If that’s all though, I have to be going. See you tomorrow.” He hung up before you could answer.
Deep in your gut, you could sense a pooling feeling of Nausea.
Dyeth tittered, “Oh you got game.”
Did you just flirt with Light? And he seemed like he was into it…Nevermind that. The most important thing is that you will be able to study him. See if anything he does can prove or disprove your theory. It wasn’t looking promising for the latter option.
“Oh Light…” You closed your eyes, letting the hand that pressed your phone against your ear drop, the rest of your body deflating shortly after. “Please don’t be Kira.”
